Taking Care Of A Pomeranian's CoatThe Pomeranian's biggest bragging point is probably their coat, and everyone can see why. The Pomeranian has two coats, a thick, soft wool-alike undercoat and a harsh outercoat.
The maintenance of such a coat requires some attention, personally I don't find taking care of a pet dog's coat too demanding considering how much of it there is. A brush through with a flexible slicker brush and a finishing comb every other day (or after each adventure!), is all it takes as far as brushing goes, making sure to pay extra attention to the areas around the ears, the belly and legs of the dog. Brushing should absolutely be performed by the dogs' owner, as a monthly grooming session at a groomers' won't be regular enough to prevent matting. You will soon come up with a routine and learn your individual dogs' coat grooming requirements and how frequently they require brushing. Bathing should be done regularly to maintain the condition of the coat, at least once a month, with a shampoo which is suitable for the coat, we use and recommend Starfire's Canine Care Line products. Learning to trim or cut a Pomeranian coat using grooming scissors is a useful skill and I am happy to advise new owners on where to start, but knowing a good groomer with an understanding of the breeds' coat care needs is ideal. |
NEVER shave a Pomeranians coat and refrain from cutting the coat of a dog under 8 months old. Shaving a Pomeranian's coat is not good for them, it can lead to Alopecia and causes them other discomforts. A Pomeranian's coat, even in summer, greatly helps them regulate their own temperature, without their coat they cannot do this.
Unless for a medical reason, your Pomeranian should not be shaved, this is included in my contract that my puppies go home with. |
